Thinking About runDisney? What You Should Know

runDisney 5K medal and two souvenir race cups on a table at sunrise

Over on DATW, our Disney World bucket list for adults used to have a line that said we’d do a runDisney event someday. The note next to it said we don’t run, but we’d consider it if it involved Disney.

Then we needed a way to rationalize ONE MORE TRIP to Disney World, and we’d always been a little intrigued by the races. So we signed up. Please, please, PLEASE know that we are not runners. We don’t even play them on TV!

But, since then, Arya and I have done a bunch of runDisney races. This October we’re both running all three Wine & Dine races: the 5K, the 10K, and the half. It’s also the first year we’ve signed up for a perfect WDW season, so (gulp!) Wine & Dine is race weekend number one.

And we aren’t alone in jumping into this running stuff. There has been a huge boom in running ever since Covid. Lots of people who never considered it have been picking it up, and even for the back of the pack people like us, we’ve found a home.

Maybe you keep seeing runDisney everywhere too, and you’re wondering if it’s for you. This is what we’d tell a friend. It covers what a race weekend costs, whether you can walk it, how it changes your park days, and what a non-running partner does all weekend.

The short version: if you love EPCOT at night and you can live with an early alarm, runDisney for adults is a fun, different way to do a Disney trip. Wine & Dine is the weekend we’d point a first-timer toward.

Is runDisney Worth It for Adults?

It depends a lot less on how fast you are and a lot more on what kind of trip you like. Here’s the quick gut check:

You’ll probably love it if…
You might want to skip it if…
You like having a goal on a trip, something to train for and talk about after
Sleep is the whole point of your vacation
You can walk or run/walk a 16-minute mile for the whole distance
A 16-minute mile for 3 to 13 miles sounds out of reach right now
One of you wants to run and one of you wants to sleep in and cheer
You want every single day of the trip to be a full park day
You’re already eyeing a fall EPCOT trip for Food & Wine
Race fees on top of park tickets would blow the budget
You like late nights in EPCOT and a party crowd
Thousands of happy strangers in costumes at 4 a.m. is your personal nightmare

Mostly left column? Keep reading. Mostly right column? That’s okay too! You don’t need a medal to have a great Disney trip.

Why Wine & Dine Is the Easiest First Race Weekend

We’ve done a bunch of race weekends now, and for adults trying runDisney for the first time, Wine & Dine is the one we’d pick. These are our three reasons why:

The Party Is Built In

The half marathon on Sunday morning ends with an after party in EPCOT that same night, and your half marathon registration already includes it. After a nap, you get to spend Sunday night in World Showcase with your friends, medal and all.

Wine & Dine is the only runDisney weekend with an after-party. Marathon Weekend, Princess, and Springtime Surprise end with a medal and a nap. That’s why we love this one.

That party is what makes this weekend feel like a Disney vacation with a race in it, instead of a race with a vacation attached. It’s also the reason a non-running partner has something to look forward to.

Food & Wine Is Running

The 2026 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival runs August 27 to November 21, so race weekend lands right in the middle of it. The festival booths (Disney calls them Global Marketplaces) are open during the party, which means your post-race dinner is a lap around World Showcase.

If you want the full festival game plan, we broke down every booth and what a day there costs in our EPCOT Food & Wine Festival guide for adults on DATW.

The Challenge Is Shorter than Marathon Weekend

The Disney Two Course Challenge is the 10K on Saturday plus the half on Sunday, 19.3 miles over two mornings, for $449 to $459. Compare that with Marathon Weekend, where Goofy is the half and the full for $495, and Dopey is four races on four days ending in a full marathon, for $769. Princess has a two-race challenge too, the Fairy Tale Challenge, and the Springtime Surprise Challenge is all three races.

runDisney Wine & Dine Half Marathon medals and drink

If you want a challenge medal without handing your whole trip over to it, two early mornings is a LOT easier to plan around than four.

The Case Against Wine & Dine

It’s October in Florida. Race mornings can still be warm and sticky, and the January and late-February race weekends usually start cooler. If heat wipes you out, that’s a fair reason to wait for Princess or Marathon Weekend instead.

The party has a cost too. The half starts at 5 a.m. Sunday and the party starts at 10 p.m. that night (but your party ticket gets you in starting at 5!), so you’re doing both on very little sleep. A long midday nap is NOT optional.

runDisney hasn’t announced 2027-28 dates yet. Last year the next Wine & Dine date came out around race weekend, so if you’re reading this in late October, keep an eye on runDisney’s official site.

What Each runDisney Race Costs

Race
2026-27 price
5K
$125-135
10K
$175-185
10-Miler
$239
Half Marathon
$249-279
Marathon
$255

Every price includes runDisney’s 6.6% service fee, so the number you see is the number you pay. Minimum ages are 5 for the 5K, 10 for the 10K, 14 for the half, and 18 for the marathon, Goofy, and Dopey.

What a Race Weekend Costs Two Adults

The race fee is the number you see when you sign up but it’s not what the weekend costs.

Here’s the math two ways for Wine & Dine 2026, using four nights at Pop Century (Thursday to Monday), where we stayed for race weekend last year. Count Sunday night. If you fly home Sunday, you miss the after party. Room and park ticket prices come from our own rate tracking and are before tax.

Line item
One runner + one cheerleader
Two runners, Two Course Challenge
Race registration
Half Marathon: $249-279
Two Course Challenge x 2: $898-918
Party ticket for the non-runner
$125
$0, included for both
Pop Century, 4 nights (Oct 22-26)
$965-1,185
$965-1,185
Park tickets
$0 (the party gets you both into EPCOT from 5 p.m. Sunday)
2-day tickets for two: about $720
Party-night Food & Wine (4 dishes + 4 cocktails each)
About $165
About $165
Total before tax
About $1,505-1,755
About $2,750-2,990

That first column surprised us. The cheapest good version of race weekend has no park tickets at all, because the party ticket gets you into EPCOT from 5 p.m. Sunday with the festival running.

Of course, most of us didn’t fly to Disney World to see one park for one night. If you add a park day, one-day tickets on October 23 and 24 run $179 to $199 per person before tax in our tracking, depending on the park.

The Food & Wine line is from our own festival math this year: four dishes and four cocktails comes to about $82 a person, because the cocktails cost a lot more than the food. Flights, the rest of your meals, and whatever you buy at the expo are on top of all this.

If you’re picking a resort for race weekend, every Disney resort gets race-day buses, so choose on everything else. Our best Disney World resorts for adults ranking is a good place to start.

But, although these weekends are expensive, here’s something that’s a bit of a perk. You sign up SO FAR AHEAD for these races (months and months) that by the time you go, the race part feels “FREE”, lol.

Can You Walk a runDisney Race?

Yes, as long as you can hold a 16-minute mile. That’s the pace requirement for every race distance, the 5K included. We’re proof that you don’t have to be a runner: we’ve finished a bunch of these, and neither of us is one.

Lit-up Mile 1 marker with a race clock on a dark runDisney course

The clock starts when the LAST runner crosses the start line, not when you do. Pacers known as the Balloon Ladies hold that 16-minute pace from the very back, and if they pass you, you can be pulled off the course. Wine & Dine 2026 also has pace cyclists at each mile marker.

At the 2026 half marathon, the first group starts at 5 a.m. and the last group starts around 6 a.m. So if you start in an early group, you have close to an hour of cushion on the balloon ladies before you even begin.

A 16-minute mile is 3.75 miles per hour. That’s a brisk walk, quicker than a stroll through World Showcase, so even walkers need some training. A lot of adults use run/walk intervals, where you run for a set time and then walk. The official half marathon pace groups use intervals all the way down to 15 seconds of running and 30 seconds of walking.

We train with the runDisney training plans by Jeff Galloway. They’re run/walk plans, with versions for beginners and for experienced runners.

How Race Weekend Changes Your Park Days

Race weekend reshapes the whole trip, mostly because of how early the mornings start. Here’s what changes:

  • Resort race buses start running at 2:30 a.m. on 5K and half marathon mornings, and at 3 a.m. for the 10K. 10K and half runners are told to be at EPCOT by 4 a.m.
  • If you drive, EPCOT parking is free before 7:30 a.m. on race mornings.
  • Road closures start as early as 3 a.m., and on half marathon Sunday some last until 10:30 a.m. A morning at another park can mean a slow trip.
  • EPCOT opens late on Friday, October 23, and Sunday, October 25, at 10 a.m. with Early Entry at 9:30.
  • The expo, where you pick up your bib, is at ESPN Wide World of Sports, not in a park. It runs Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If you want race merchandise, the expo merch virtual queue opens at 7 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., on Thursday only. 5K runners have to pick up their bibs on Thursday, and Two Course Challenge runners by Friday.

We don’t tend to buy a lot of merch. BUT we do love getting a beer after the race, and it comes in a souvenir cup. We love the cups. And the beer.

Plan on the buses for race events, too. During Princess weekend in February 2026, this sign was up telling runners the Skyliner wasn’t providing transportation to race activities.

How We’d Lay Out the Weekend

Fly in Wednesday, not Thursday, if you’re running the 5K. You have to pick up your own bib, and 5K bibs are only handed out at the expo on Thursday. There’s no official race-morning pickup. The expo closes at 8 p.m. Thursday, so one delayed flight could cost you the 5K.

If you were planning on running Wine and Dine, this is what we’d suggest.

Day
If you’re running
If you’re cheering
Wed, Oct 21
Fly in. Pool and an easy dinner.
Same
Thu, Oct 22
Expo for your bib (5K bibs are Thursday only)
Pool, or come along for the expo
Fri, Oct 23
5K before sunrise if you signed up, nap, then an easy afternoon park
Sleep in, then meet up for the park
Sat, Oct 24
10K, nap, short evening, early bedtime
Sleep in, a park morning on your own
Sun, Oct 25
Half marathon, a LONG nap, party entry from 5 p.m.
Cheer at the finish, nap, party
Mon, Oct 26
Sleep in. You earned it.
Same

Those post-race naps are our usual midday break with an earlier alarm. It’s one of the things we do to make Disney World trips easier.

Our own plan this year is a lot lazier. Pool on Wednesday. Expo on Thursday, and maybe a park if we feel like it. Friday is the 5K and the pool, Saturday is the 10K and the pool with maybe a little park time, and Sunday is the half and THE PARTY and some dranks.

We can be that chill because we’re at Disney World so much. If this is your one trip this year, put a park in those afternoons instead.

If you do want park time, walking can be great for your legs after a race. It keeps you from getting stiff. Just be smart about it.

Either way, the one thing we’d protect is Saturday night. If you’re running the half on Sunday, a big Saturday park night is how you end up standing in a corral at 4:30 a.m. wondering why you did this to yourself.

If Your Partner Isn’t Running

Race weekend works great when only one of you runs. The non-runner gets to sleep in most mornings and still gets the party on Sunday night.

Race Morning

The non-runner can sleep. We mean it! On half marathon morning, spectators can watch the start in EPCOT’s Rocket lot from 4:30 to 6 a.m., and the finish in the Eve lot from 5:30 to 9:45 a.m.

runDisney fans hold signs: "Run Churros Later!!" and "You're Running Better than the GOVT

If you only pick one, pick the finish. At the start it’s dark, and your runner is packed into a corral. You’ll see them for about two seconds. The finish is where they want a hug and a photo with the medal.

The Party Ticket

Runners in the half and the Two Course Challenge get into the party with their registration. Everyone else needs a Post-Race Party ticket, which is $125 for 2026.

Party ticket holders can enter EPCOT from 5 p.m. Sunday. For comparison, a one-day EPCOT ticket on October 25 is $184 before tax in our tracking, so the party ticket is the cheaper way into EPCOT that day, with Food & Wine still going.

What the Wine & Dine After Party Includes

The 2026 party is Sunday, October 25, and it officially starts at 10 p.m. With a party ticket, you can get into EPCOT as early as 5 p.m. You scan your party ticket (not your bib) at the Main Entrance or at the International Gateway and get a wristband.

runDisney’s event guide lists these attractions as open during the party: Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, Soarin’, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track, Living with the Land, Spaceship Earth, and Gran Fiesta Tour. The festival booths and entertainment are open too.

Plan to pay for your food and drinks at the booths like any other festival day. Half and Challenge runners also got a $15 Disney promo card by email on October 15.

We’re not going to rank every booth cocktail here, because we already did that. Our 2026 Food & Wine drinks guide on DATW has the full beer, wine, and cocktail list, and our guide to the bars in EPCOT covers the sit-down spots if your legs are done with standing.

Disney resort party buses run until an hour after the party ends. If you’re staying somewhere else, our guide to getting to EPCOT has every other option.

How runDisney Registration Works

Registration is HARD. OMG. It’s like trying to get Taylor Swift tickets, I swear to gawd.

Registration opens at 10 a.m. Eastern through an online waiting room. Anyone who joins before 10 gets a random place in line, and anyone who joins after 10 goes to the back. So be in the waiting room by 9:55 with your payment info saved.

For the 2026-27 season, registration opened February 10 for Wine & Dine, March 17 for Marathon Weekend, June 8 for Princess, and July 7 for Springtime Surprise, all at 10 a.m. Eastern. Princess was supposed to open June 2 and got pushed to June 8 after the registration site failed. Told you it was hard.

For the 2026-27 season, Marathon Weekend, Princess, and Springtime Surprise are all sold out. Popular weekends go fast, so pick your races before registration day, not during it.

Club runDisney is the paid membership, and for 2026 it’s $289 for Silver, $635 for Gold, and $993 for Platinum. Gold and Platinum members get their own registration window a week before everyone else.

runDisney 19.3-mile challenge medal leaning on a souvenir race cup

For a first race, we’d skip the club. Gold at $635 costs more than the half marathon itself, plus the only people who get spots are people who’ve already been paying for Silver for a few years.

Our best tip to snagging a registration is to maximize the number of devices you have entering the queue. Some people say that’s cheating; that’s just how you have to do it nowadays, sadly. We’ll often have 8 devices for the 2 of us, plus 2 other friends who have several devices. Usually between all of that, at least ONE of us gets in.

runDisney FAQ for Adults

Does runDisney Include Park Tickets?

No. Your race registration covers the race. For Wine & Dine, the half marathon and Two Course Challenge also include the after party in EPCOT on Sunday night, but park days need their own tickets.

Do You Have to Be a Runner?

No. You have to hold a 16-minute mile, timed from when the last runner crosses the start. Plenty of adults walk or run/walk the whole thing.

Can Non-Runners Go to the Wine & Dine Party?

Yes. Friends and family can buy a Post-Race Party ticket, which is $125 for 2026, and get into EPCOT from 5 p.m. on party day.

What’s the Minimum Age for runDisney Races?

5 for the 5K, 10 for the 10K, 14 for the half marathon, and 18 for the marathon, Goofy, and Dopey.

When Is the Next Wine & Dine Weekend?

runDisney hasn’t announced 2027 dates yet. Last year the next Wine & Dine date came out around race weekend.

Our Take on runDisney for Adults

If you’ve been watching other people’s medal photos and wondering, Wine & Dine is the friendliest way in. The race is done by late morning, the party is in EPCOT during Food & Wine, and your non-running partner gets to come along for the fun part.

We’ll be the ones at the pool on Saturday afternoon and at the party on Sunday night. While you decide, pack smart with our Disney World packing list for adults, and start planning the party-night drinks with the Food & Wine drinks guide on DATW.
